Fun With Cameras
When Jerry and I were at Alcatraz, we saw this old Chevrolet Truck. I thought it would make a good pic so I played around with my camera settings a bit. One day maybe I'll start a photo blog, but for now, here you go!

When chatting online do you feel the need to "wrap it up" like ending a phone call or do you just sort of stop commenting? I have done both and while I lean towards the 'wrap it up' I get socially awkward about it once several minutes have passed.... do I say something? Have they already closed the window and it would be odd for me to say goodbye now?
These are the things I think about.
Aside from the flack I know I will get for daring to access this website, I just have to ask. WHO did they get to do the graphics on the Fox News Decision 2008 site???
What if you won the lottery and could do anything you wanted in the whole world? There. That's what your career would be.
If this is true then my future would consist of the 3 C's:
When will I figure out what I want to be when I grow up? I feel like I am a mouse on a wheel. The wheel might change, but I am that same mouse going nowhere. I need to stop finding wheels.
Anyone have have an open road for this old mouse?
I did my time at the Social Security office and I am the proud owner of a new last name! Hooray!
Well my good friends Joe and Jessica just celebrated their one month wedding anniversary! In honor of this special time, I decided to dedicate this post to them and finally write about their wedding!
As soon as Jerry and I decided that our honeymoon would start in San Francisco, we knew that we wanted to check out Alcatraz. We have both always been fascinated by "The Rock" and had to see it. Plus a nice ferry ride never hurt anyone. What we didn't realize is that you have to buy your ticket several days in advance. Since we were only there for two days, we knew we had to do something!
Upon arriving to San Francisco, our first order of business was to get some food! We decided to go to Fisherman's Wharf and get some seafood. I'll save that for another post because it was SO good... Anyway! We asked our waitress how we should go about getting tickets to Alcatraz for the next day. She said that since the ticket booth would be sold out, there are street vendors that you can usually get them from. Not shy about a good haggle, I was excited at the prospect.
We set off to find ourselves a street vendor and happened upon a corner store for Shell Vacations. Basically it's a time-share program and they give stuff away. We were greeted by a guy who gleefully referred to himself as "Peter from the Wharf". Each time he talked about somewhere we should go, he would say, "just tell them Peter from the Wharf sent you." Now it may be just me, but just because you add "from the Wharf" to your name, that doesn't make it any less common. I digress. After some discussion, we decided to take the gamble and sit through the schpeal. Here is how we got free tickets to Alcatraz:
In exchange for a $20 deposit, Peter from the Wharf signed us up for a 90 minute presentation for Shell Vacations the next morning. We did sacrifice our time, but it was well worth it! We made a pact that every answer would be no and off we went! For our 1.5 hours of time, we cleaned out with the freebies! Of course we didn't buy anything but here is what we got:
- The refund of our $20 deposit to 'hold our spot'
- Free Breakfast
- Free Parking at the Wharf
- FREE tickets to Alcatraz
- Tickets for a Trolley ride around town that we sold back for $20
- 2 free nights at a hotel (i.e. Hilton Head)
- The pleasure of meeting Peter from the Wharf!
We knew that handing over $20 was a gamble, but on the first day, we were willing to chance it for the fun and the possibility that it wasn't a scam. Let me tell you, those time share people are hilarious! And crafty! But we managed to say no no no thank you! We had a great time at Alcatraz and love that it was such a fun story!
Just as Jerry and I were about to make our big entrance to the wedding reception, our friend (an excellent photographer) Geoff ran out and asked if he could snap a picture for his photo blog. Of course we said yes and here it is! Thanks Geoff!

The amount of joy I get from the most mundane things of married life is positively silly. I am sure my poor husband is getting project whiplash the way I jump from one thing to another. After a weekend of soul-searching I finally realized that my need to "nest" comes from my honest desire to build into our home, our relationship and our marriage. I associate images of my home life with happiness and success. I am not sure if this is entirely reasonable, but it makes sense to me.
For instance, being organized is a big part of who I want to be. I feel like if I can get my house under control, somehow everything else will fall into place. Also, I am turning into my mother. I don't really see this as a bad thing. It's just interesting to observe. I never really understood why the candles changed with the seasons, but now that the weather is turning, I can't wait to get my hands on some cinnamon and pumpkin spiced air fresheners. I put a fall decoration on the door and instantly felt more at home and at ease. I suppose part of it is having a home to do these things in, and also nostalgia of a happy childhood.
Jerry and I had a conversation about my need (or desire) to constantly dream about the house. What changes would I make if I could, where should I hang pictures, how can we spice things up etc. He didn't want me to be unhappy with what we have. I however, don't see it as being unhappy, it's just a way for me to be creative with my surroundings and make a warm and cozy home for my family. I mentioned this to mom and she laughed and told me of the years of this same conversation she has had with my dad. She also said that we get it from my Grammy, who my mom remembers, would sit in her farmhouse kitchen in the 1950s with a paper and pencil sketching out how she would like to change it if she ever had the chance! So thanks Grammy, for paving the creative way :-)
We painted the front door red on Saturday and it looks great! Last night, Jerry put up new house numbers that will actually be legible from the street and we finally made some progress in the guest room. It's a fun transition that we are going through together. We make a great team and I am so thankful!
I am in love with my new journal by Jill Bliss. I just happened upon it while shopping for the house and had to have it. I am a journal freak (yes on paper too) and I just really love this one.
Not only is the cover exceptionally pretty. Each page is graph paper with equally lovely designs. It makes me want to write and draw and be creative. Hooray! I found mine locally at Accipiter, but you can get one at Fred Flare. Happy shopping!
Well we finally got our pictures online from the honeymoon!! I have been trying to go in order for all of the post-wedding wrap ups, but I can't wait anymore!! We took our trip from San Fransisco, up through Napa Valley and then back to the coast. Then we drove north on the coast through Oregon, stopped off in Corvallis and ended up in Seattle!
We had an amazing time and so many stories! For now, here are a few teasers! :-)
Somehow I can't say no to my co-workers. They say hey, do you want to do such and such? And I am thinking, NO, NO I don't want to do that! Anything but that! How do I get out of here??? I can't breathe! But somehow, what comes out of my mouth is, "sure, that sounds like fun." Case in point, the 5k.
Our office sponsored a local 5k this weekend and part of the deal is that you get 4 free entries. In a weak moment of post-honeymoon fatness, I decided that running this race would be good motivation to get my butt in gear. The problem is, I forgot all about the race until you guessed it, Friday.
Co-workers: Sooooooo are you ready to run on Sunday???
Me: Yeah I don't really think you get that I don't run.
Co-workers: Oh come on it's gonna be great! We'll stick together! All for one and one for all!
Did I mention that said co-workers are both over 6 feet tall and I stand at a respectable 5'7"?? I digress...
Co-workers: We have one more slot to fill. Do you know of anyone else who would like to run?
Me: (Inside-cackle) OH I am SURE Jerry would want to! I'll call him right now!!!!
Jerry: Ummmmm......
Me: Great so you're in!
Jerry: ummmm.....if no one else will, then I will I guess.
Me: perfect!!!
Now I can share this dreadful experience with the one I love most! It's sort of like eating something terrible and saying, 'eww this is awful! Try it!" and then saying, "OMG this is soooo good!,'
'oh yeah? Can I try it?'
"NO WAY!!!"
Little did I know that besides not being particularly in shape, I would have all of the forces of good and evil to contend with in making it through this race. You see, as a last resort, we accepted the request to play in the church band that morning. This means showing up to church at 8am and staying until around 1pm. The race started at 2pm so we only had time for a few snacks and off we went.
Excuse #2 and perhaps the most viable was that I had an INSANELY painful tooth crisis on Saturday night and was coincidentally awake for most of it writhing in pain, sobbing, or just all around keeping Jerry awake worrying about me.
However, when Sunday rolled around we rolled out and got to it. Advil in hand. We went to church and made our way down the block for the race. The great news was that the free shirt was a great quality long-sleever (cha-ching). And there were donuts!
It was time to start running RUNNING! I didn't have the proper shoes, the proper clothing, or for that matter sunglasses! Jerry kindly sacrificed his sunglasses (to shut me up no doubt) and off we went. I am pretty sure that I could have walked faster than I jogged, and yes my co-workers left me in the dust after the first corner. But I did it. We did it. Despite my needing to walk for a bit here and there, Jerry stuck by me. I would say, go on, push yourself, I'll see you at the Finish Line. And he wouldn't have it. He said no way, I'm not leaving you to run it alone.
We talked and laughed at ourselves each time we hit a mile marker. He never left my side. My tooth managed to stop screaming and despite one minor blister, we made it! And we actually had fun! We are even talking about giving the whole running thing a real shot. We both need shoes. And I need to learn how to breathe. That was the absolute worst part for me.
Today I went to the dentist and am no longer in pain. My legs feel all sore (and great) and my husband has a big shiny gold star next to his name :-)
Our time you ask? 40:05
Now we have something to beat!
