I am learning alot these days. Especially that things are not always what they seem. Today at Vintage, Tyler talked about conflict and how it is an entirely healthy part of life. Not because of the negativity, but because of how we react to it. I am finding that I don't react very well. C.S. Lewis said ""Surely what a man does when he is taken off his guard is the best evidence for what sort of man he is..." --Mere Christianity -- What a startling reality that is. I am at my worst when taken off my guard in any aspect of life. Whether it be work, relationships, family, if something doesn't go as expected or as I had hoped, I freak out.

In most of these instances, it is a loud and dramatic tantrum. I am not kidding. Many times I can make a joke out of it, but I am honestly amazed at my ability to transform from easy-going gal to all out spoiled brat. I think it stems from a sense of entitlement. I had a pretty great upbringing and a rather pain free childhood, therefore, I feel like I earned some kind of special treatment of sorts. If people don't see it my way all I see is rejection and off I go into the throes of dramatics. Usually, I experience guilt soon after, followed by some kind of attempt at resolution.

My goal is to get to a place where I can really listen to people and allow things to happen without taking everything so personally. At work I need to hold it together. My office environment is very free and the expletives are plentiful, as is the complaining. In almost three years, this is a habit that I have adopted readily and I think it is time to reign it in.

In my personal life, I want to understand people more. Surprise surprise, the world does not revolve around me and I need to realize that everyone has things to deal with that are just as hard or harder than my life.

All in all, I am happy....impatient...but happy. I know that I am being cared for. And that is a comforting fact, even in the face of change. That being said, I just came across my New Years' Resolution from January..... "I don't usually make New Year's resolutions, but if I had to make one this year, it would be, to be happy where I am in life instead of always wishing things were different."....well whaddya know.

***oh yeah. I had a ridiculous dream last night. Here goes:
I was on an airplane turning around a pocketknife in my hand remebering how easy it had been to get it through security. I remember thinking, man this is so crazy, I am just sitting here holding a KNIFE! At that moment, a female security guard on the plane came over and said, 'I am going to have to confiscate that', to which I said, 'Please do! I can't even beleive they let me on the plane.' So she took it, but her hands were sortof over my hands and all of a sudden, I realized that she had cut my finger with the knife. At which time the plane started to land vertically (like a helicopter) and we were all escorted off the plane into a parking lot. It was dark and everyone was yelling for each of us to stand on top of the roofs of the cars...one each. Then they said we would be travelling the rest of the way alone. And then I was literally sucked into the universe and I could feel my heart pound as I prayed that I wouldn't dissolve. As fast as I went up I plummeted down, where I found out it was 17 days later. All I could think about was that I missed my trip....and what happened in those 17 days?? Then I woke up.

Well...it's true that everything happens for a reason....

So I FINALLY heard about the job in NYC today (over 2 weeks later) and they have decided to go with someone else, even though they were "very impressed with my resume" ...So that is just another little confirmation that I made the right choice.

Thank you to everyone who has been praying for me and have been so nice in "welcoming" me back!

I know good things are ahead.

Trust is a funny thing. It takes miles to build it up and only inches to shatter it completely. But it is also subjective. Some of us choose to trust people we know we shouldn't and mistrust people who should be trusted. What makes people so clueless? I think it is selfish motivation. We believe what we want to believe to make our world happy in the hopes that it will make sense. When really, we are blinding ourselves to the truth that will eventually slap us in the face.

I keep thinking that with every wrong step I am somehow moving closer to finding truth, in the form of lessons learned. But the fact is, I just end up with a slap in the face.

Grandpa, tell me a story

This is something I never said enough. I never asked my grandparents enough questions. They were amazing people with so much to offer me and I just didn't think to ask. I have one remaining grandmother whom I love dearly. She and I still write letters. Hand-written letters. I know it is getting harder for her because of her age *over 90* but she still does it. What kind of love is that?

She is an amazing woman. Her mother was too poor to care for both of her daughters, so she gave my grammy to her own mother to be raised. I don't know what happened to her father, but I don't think he was in the picture much. So grammy was raised by her grandparents and turned into an amazing and independent woman. She was on the girls basketball team in high school and went on to the working world after that, mostly bookkeeping. She was so unusual for her time and so vibrant and intelligent. She still takes notes in shorthand and can rattle off the 20 different medications she is on and what each one is for. She laughs and cries when she talks about memories of my grandfather. She is alone now.

Growing up I always admired her relationship with him. They were a real team. They baked pies together, went on vacations and worked in the rose garden. They would watch the Price is Right every day and each time I came to visit, we would play cards after dinner til it was time for bed...they always let me stay up a little late. Recently my mother was going through an old game of theirs, Skip-Bo....it had a score sheet of over 200 games that my grandparents had played. The on-going game was tied. They even did the dishes together (she would wash/he would dry) My grampy was incredible. He was a baker-turned-farmer and had a heart of gold. Even though he passed away over 15 years ago, Grammy still wears her wedding band.

How did a woman with her background turn into such an amazing role model? What was their system of trust that allowed them such long-lived happiness? I wish I knew how to acheive that kind of life. I want to have stories to tell. I wish I had asked more questions.

New York New York

Well here I am again in New York! The interview is tomorrow and today has been a lovely day of travel and relaxation to get ready for the big day! I went to a new church in the City. Took me forEVER to find it. But I did, and it was worth it. Much MUCH better than the one I tried on my last visit. Since I went straight from the airport I was stil 30 minutes early, even after wandering around for the better part of an hour in Soho. SO, there was a ballfield conveniently across the street from Mosaic (the church) and I sat there reading and watching a mom play baseball with her 2 young children (both of whom were better than I ever was, I might add) That is one thing I love about the City. While you get so used to all of the concrete and highrises, there are all of these beautiful parks around and something about them being so out of place makes them all the more beautiful...almost...greener.

So it has been a good day. I met up with Ben and Lindsey for lunch at Gray's Papaya Hot Dogs...Finally got my hot dog!! It was good and now it's over. It's a beautiful day today. The weather is great. I tell myself that now knowing full well that I will actually freeze to near death in the coming months...but we'll think about that later.

I am definitely feeling more positive about the move on this trip. I think having a better experience at this new church helps alot. It's not so much that I NEED to be in a church all the time, but something about it helps me maintain my center...as if no matter where I am in the world, this is home. It's comforting really. I can only hope that tomorrow I will feel this good!! I am so ready for this interview to be behind me!! So much to do and I just can't seem to get focused!! Alot of things are happening right now and I am enjoying them all. Next month at this time, I will be back here...no longer a visitor, but a resident. It's mind-boggling. This has been one amazing summer. I can't even express how alive I feel. And hopefully, this is only the beginning.

Nah

So it's boring at work again. God bless it. I am going crazy. I could be at home packing...or at least pretending to pack while watching tv and/or napping. Instead I am here pretending to be working. The difference of course is that I can't nap at my desk. Much to the dismay of my George Costanza miseducation.

Th romance of having to run off to the city early to start my great new job has waned some, mostly due to the fact that my second interview isn't even til Monday, and partly due to the fact that I am no where ready to go. But now I am faced with the sick reality that I really will be at this job for another 4 weeks. And that just might be enough to drive me over the edge.

I love four day weekends. I have been so productive already and there are still 2.5 days left!! Happy 4th of July!!
