Tradition!

Jerry and I are not Jewish. However, I was raised in a Christian home that believed that our beliefs not only stem from, but are directly connected to Jewish roots and faith. That being said, there are a long line of wedding traditions to draw from. One such tradition is when the Groom stomps on a wine glass after the couple is pronounced husband and wife.

Originally, the meaning behind this is to remember the brokenness of Jerusalem and the Jewish connection with that Ancient City. However, there are more modern interpretations for this action that we will use to explain why we chose to incorporate it. Following is a pretty good summation:

"The breaking of the glass at the end of a wedding ceremony serves to remind of two very important aspects of a marriage. The bride and groom - and everyone - should consider these marriage vows as an IRREVOCABLE ACT - just as permanent and final as the breaking of this glass is unchangeable. But the breaking of the glass also is a warning of the FRAILTY of a marriage. That sometimes a single thoughtless act, breech of trust, or infidelity can damage a marriage in ways that are very difficult to undo - just as it would be so difficult to undo the breaking of this glass. (Bride) and (Groom), knowing that this marriage is permanent, you should strive to show each other the love and respect befitting your spouse and love of your life."

I am really glad we have decided to do this. I think it will add a lot to our wedding and it's meaningful to me that we are making our commitment public in such a memorable way!

do you think we should use one of the rental wine glasses, or provide our own?
