My soapbox post for this year....

This week has been crazy busy at work. I have been running almost non-stop during the day and then had meetings/practice at night. It helps the time go by fast, but boy am I tired! I am very ready for a nice weekend.

I am also ready for election season to be over. I am trying hard to walk the line of understanding and debate, but some comments can be really inflammatory (from any direction) and it is exhausting! I am however, looking forward to voting! Jerry and I are devoting some time this weekend to really understand the local elections. We believe that is just as important (if not more) than the Presidential and larger races so we want to be sure we know where we stand on everything - from President to Judges and education, etc. We decided to wait to vote until Tuesday. Mostly because I just love election day and it's sort of like a holiday to me. My parents always took me with them to the polls when I was a child, so it's always been a big deal. Also we get to vote at the school that is within walking distance of our house so we can go as a family! And finally, Krispy Kreme is giving away a free donut to anyone who shows up with their 'I voted' sticker that day ;-) It's all about priorities people!!!

That being said, I know that election season brings out the passion in all of us that that is a really good thing. Those of you that read this blog (that I know of) are all my friends and I respect your values and reasoning when it comes to who you have chosen to vote for. I honestly think it is possible to disagree on solutions, but know that we all are concerned about the same things. I am so glad to be surrounded by thoughtful, interested people who want to make a difference!

I was really struck by our pastor's message a couple weeks ago. I am a Christian as hopefully all of you know and his reminder was that our real hope is not in these men, but in Jesus. At first glance, that seems like a provincial ideal. But I have to tell you that once I latched onto that as THE reality, I have really been able to relax about the outcome of this election. I encourage anyone to listen to it here. I plan to listen again over the weekend.

The fact is, Christians should be involved in every part of society, including politics. But the way they(we) operate should not be any different than any other part of life in that what it means to be a follower of Jesus is to let Him guide you in all things. This includes not passing judgment on those we disagree with, trying to be humble and putting others higher than ourselves. I am very passionate about politics and getting things done. It excites me and I am so grateful to live in a country where my voice can be heard. I know I am guilty of thinking "they just don't get it. If they would just think like me things would be better". That is seriously the most dangerous line of thinking because it elevates my ego to altitudes of imperceptible proportions and creates an environment in which nothing gets done. It is harmful to me as it puts my ideas in a cage and there is no room for compromise. It also harms those who disagree with me because I am alienating them and their views as well. I don't want to do that.

I love that I am surrounded by people who think differently than me. Many of my family and friends will vote for McCain, as will I. Many more will vote for Obama and several are still deciding. My point is, I am not going to try and convince you to vote "my way". The whole point of this process is to get people thinking and praying and deciding for themselves. For me to think my way is the only way is nothing short of arrogance. I will gladly discuss any of my political views with anyone who asks. My one request is that my choices are regarded with respect and if we disagree, we can still walk together. To be surrounded by only one view is toxic and I am thankful for the variety of opinions I hear on a daily basis.

Here is my plan, and for my one political soap box post, I would like to ask you to join me. For those of us that are followers of Jesus, one thing we can all agree on is to pray. Pray for this country. Pray for the election. Pray for the leaders. Pray for the American people. No matter which side you are on, there will only be one who is elected. Pray for that person. Pray that the side who loses will be gracious about it. Pray for political healing and willingness to forge ahead and work together.

It is out of our hands once we have voted. I encourage you to listen to Tyler's message posted above. I think it is probably the most important word I have heard yet on the election and I could not agree with him more. We SHOULD care, but we are human and we will disagree on how to get things done. Instead of letting that divide us, let's trust God that He is in control and come what may, we can still go forward and do what we are called to do.

My name is Andrea Updyke, and I approved this message ;-)

My Cloth journey....thus far.

We have decided to give cloth diapering a serious go with the wee one. I never thought I would be the "type" of person to cloth diaper. In fact, I never even gave it a thought. So when my friend Jessica told me she would be using cloth I was shocked! Cloth? Who uses cloth? Actually, many of my friends do, as I would come to find out. We had just never talked about it before. And from there I entered a new world. Well sort of. I haven't actually USED it yet, but after weeks if not months of research, I decided to start building my stash. So for those of you who have yet to venture into the wild world of cloth, I'll explain....beware, it's far more addictive than one might think!

We will use pre-folds (the traditional cloth diapers you probably have in your mind) with covers to start, but I am trying to get a well rounded arsenal to try out and see what I (and the baby) like. Today was particularly exciting because I got not 1, but 2 packages in the mail containing diaper paraphernalia!

First up is a diaper cover that I purchased from diaperswappers.com. This will go over the absorbent diaper and prevent leakage. Points for super cute stripes and organic cotton!

Secondly are my favorite purchase thus far, Nana's Bottoms. I got a great deal on these and they are from a work at home mom so I feel good about throwing some money her way. I have read rave reviews about her products and at first glance they are awesome! The 2 that are plain on the outside are all-in-ones, which basically means they act just like a disposable diaper. Except you wash them instead of throwing them away! The one with the airplanes is called a fitted diaper and does not have a waterproof outer layer so it will need a cover. I also thought I would try some fleece liners for the diapers (they can be used with any diaper) to keep Baby U's tushy nice and dry. And to top it off she included the awesome pirate ducky wipe! Hooray!

I am really getting excited about using cloth, which I think is important when taking on a task like this. I mean, it's definitely not convenient so there has to be something that keeps me going. And of course all the cute patterns don't hurt!

Tomorrow we'll be in double digits in the baby countdown! Of course that is all subjective, but seeing that 99 days icon is gonna be awesome! I also realized that I am in single digits in the work countdown. Only 9 weeks until I don't have to go to the office anymore! Even better! There's a lot for us to be thankful for right now, and I am really trying to be present in each day even though I can't wait for the baby to come. Good good things.

Nursery Phase 2

So things are really coming together in the nursery! I have put together a few "corners" and even though I still need to hang some shelves and things, it's starting to look like a real room! I love going in there and just sitting in my chair looking around. It gets the best light in the house and is quickly turning into my favorite room!

I also hung the shelves in the closet and moved the clothes to their new home :-) I can't wait! Just 15 weeks to go. My how time flies. Some of my favorite things are in these pictures. In the first pic is the alphabet poster that we got for our "nerd baby". I have decided that since I was not into science, my child will be and he will be a genius. A genius that makes lots of money and provides for his elderly parents. Therefore, A is for Atom, B is for Binary Code and M is for Mandelbrot fractal set. I'll just need to spend the next 3-5 years learning what they all mean!

In the second picture is the dresser we painted and all the toys we have accumulated thus far. We got the Owl and the floppy duck at FAO Schwarz in NY and the monkey was Jerry's since he turned 1 year old. The diaper bag was sent to us by Jerry's mom and was handmade by a family friend! It also has a sweet quilted changing pad inside! The swing will live elsewhere in the house eventually but it can stay in the corner for now.

I plan to make curtains from the crib bumper material. After all my reading, that is the one I have decided to buy into, camp no-bumper. And it's a bonus for me because I don't have to buy curtains! I have to say it again, I am SO glad the holidays are coming soon to distract me! 15 weeks is nothing but it seems like forever! And that's the update!

Last weekend our friend and neighbor Bob came over for the pancake breakfast (we do it every week) and then he and Jerry spent the weekend brewing some Pumpkin Spiced Ale! It should be ready by the end of the month or so. Head on over to Witchger Projects to check out the action!

I am a Pod Person.

I feel like my mind has been taken over by aliens. What a roller coaster. Up ,down, High, Low...crazy!!! I know it's all for a good cause and I still feel ok so I try not to complain too much, but my fuse is getting shorter by the minute! I get mad watching the news, reading email, driving, thinkingbreathingeatingsleeping....the list goes on. I haven't really done a lot of crying though. I guess I am not much of a crier. I'm too much of a Leo for that. Still, I look forward to the day when I can hold our baby and forget all about this part. And that will conveniently coincide with no longer working in a dead-end job. Hooray!

Tomorrow we hit 24 weeks. Wow. 16 weeks to go (give or take)!!! That is truly exciting. I use countdowns to make it through each work day so I can reclaim whatever sanity I have left floating around in my psyche. So, in the interest of boredom, I'll share:

7 weeks til Thanksgiving
11 weeks til Christmas
12 weeks until I can work from home
14 weeks until I am off!

Let's do this.

We had a fun surprise on our doorstep yesterday! A gift from Hilary and David! They sent us a baby bath towel and one of those little rubber duckies that tells you if the water is too hot. Yay! I wanted to take pictures of the towel because it's so cute, so I enlisted some help....

Dresser - check!

Jerry and I finally finished painting the baby's new dresser! I got this from my mom and have used it in it's original state for years, but decided it would be great in the nursery. So here it is!

Before

After

After

So far the weekend has been great! We had our traditional pancake breakfast (we do it every week) and then I spent the morning knitting some wool pants to cover cloth diapers for when we make the big switch (I am thinking it will be after the first few weeks). I ordered some supplies this week and I can't wait to get them! I have a feeling the whole cloth thing is going to be addictive. I went to the yarn store on Thursday and Friday my mom gave me a GIANT stash of my grammy's old needles in every possible size. They are so lovely and colorful and shiny. I may need to dedicate a blog just to them! There are so many knitting folk out there, we should start a stitch'n'bitch! Or maybe just stitch....you get the idea ;-)

So yeah, I pretty much knitted till my hands froze and I had to switch projects! So we finished the dresser and Jerry did some yard work and now we are going on a date. Tomorrow we are in the band so likely we will see many of you there! Have a great night!
